Not a step back, such is the call of the duty – this is not any military song but expresses the mood of the belligerent postal unions in the realm of UK, steadfast to go on with the two-day national strike. Who will be the worst sufferers then? Of course the list of prospective victims includes millions of households and businesses likely to face over a fortnight of postal disruption. However, in accordance with experts, some post will take almost three weeks to get delivered before postal services get back to normal.
Here is a question. What may happen if the industrial dispute between Royal Mail and the Communication Workers Union (CWU) drags on and more strikes are called? Commoners are simply getting panicked to think of such a development and as per the majority of them, some letters stuck in the system will take even longer to reach their destination.
As per Jonathan de Carteret, founder of broker Post-Switch, Royal Mail was making use of special warehouses to house the undelivered mail which will get topped up as and when more strikes take place. Letters waylaid by the first strikes will be the last to get delivered because they will be literally at the bottom of the pile. "While Royal Mail works through the backlog of letters, it\'s unfortunately a case of first in, last out," he said.
Nevertheless, it has also come to the knowledge that Royal Mail will operate a basic service tomorrow and on Friday in consequence of the staggered strikes, involving more than 100,000 mail centre workers, delivery men and women and drivers. It has also been learnt that some 12,000 managers – members of the Unite union, which is not supporting the industrial action – will go into work and do some deliveries themselves.
Competing postal operators such as UPS and TNT Post have strengthened operations to confirm some parcels get delivered. But it is the Royal Mail who is able to deliver on a national basis to the "last mile" – from the local sorting office to people\'s homes – which is why a strike will have such a devastating effect.
Royal Mail is the national postal service of the United Kingdom. Royal Mail Holdings plc owns Royal Mail Group Limited, which sequentially operates the brands Royal Mail (UK letters), Parcelforce Worldwide (UK parcels) and General Logistics Systems. Post Office Ltd., which provides counter services, is a wholly owned subsidiary.
