Brown may have to admit economic growth is slower than predicted
Chancellor of the exchequer Gordon Brown is expected to admit in his pre-budget statement to the M.P.s that the economic growth is slower than he had expected. It will be below 2 per cent, rather than the three to 3.5 per cent he had estimated in the budget early this year.

Brazil and India agree to be flexible, call for US, EU action on farm subsidies
LONDON - The G7 finance ministers have stated that there has to be some progress at the Hong Kong meeting later this month if trade talks were to bear any fruit. The ministerial meeting called for all sides to be pragmatic in their approach so that the Doha trade round could be carried forward.

Outrage in Britain at Blairs willingness to surrender £1 billion of EU rebate
BUDAPEST, Hungary - British Prime Minister Tony Blair has announced his willingness to let go of a part of the rebate that the country enjoys on the yearly European Union budget contributions. However, this agreement is subject to a budget approval as well as reductions in the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).

Commonwealth leaders urge European Union to resolve farm subsidy issue
VALLETTA, Malta - Commonwealth leaders today stressed that the farm subsidies issue must be sorted out if any concrete progress was to be made in the next round of World Trade Organization (WTO) talks to be held in Hong Kong next month. It was this vexed issue that dogged the so-called Doha round of talks and unless there is a satisfactory solution, even this round could be a failure.

EU countries agree on sugar sector reforms, to cut prices
European Union agriculture ministers reached a landmark agreement Thursday to reform the bloc's subsidy-predominated sugar policy, to reduce prices by 36 per cent over the next four years and to offer payoffs to farmers ready to abandon beet growing.

Britain stand firm on rebate -- EU budget
Britain's foreign secretary Jack Straw has said all the European Union countries must make concessions on EU's long term budget. He said Britain will try its best to evolve an agreement next month on the 2007-2013 budget, which it had blocked in June refusing any cut in its annual refund unless it had an assurance on future cuts in farm subsidies.

Blair attempts to win over critics of education reform
Tony Blair has to convince critics within his own party to back the reforms in education. Though prime minister says reforms will make schools more autonomous and benefit more working class children, its critics feel that such a plan would allow schools to enrol pupils only on basis of merit.

Social Fund does not meet its purpose, says MP panel
Britain's Social Fund, set up to provide succour to people of low income groups facing financial difficulties, is not effective and does not fulfil the intentions for which it has been set up, according to the public affairs committee, which probed the fund's functioning.
