British Gas engineers vote for 24-hour strikes on five days
LONDON - As the holiday season gathers momentum, pray that your central heating does not run out on you. For if it does, you either have to repair it yourself or shiver out in the cold as thousands of British Gas engineers have decided to resort to 24-hour strikes and withdraw the ''unsocial'' hours cover.

Blair inclined to give a generous basic pension
Prime minister Tony Blair has indicated that his government may provide a more generous basic state pension in order to push for raising the pension age from 65 to 67. This is, however, contrary to the views held by chancellor Gordon Brown, who has reportedly rejected plans for a state pension linked to average earnings and a rise in the state pension age to 67.

Rankled unions accuse CBI of ‘hypocrisy’ in pensions debate
LONDON: Nearly 80 percent of FTSE 100 company directors are assured of a generous nest egg when they retire at 60, trade unions said today. Top company directors could retire with an average pensions payout that is 26 times that of most employees, hence “they should stop lecturing the rest of us” the TUC’s general secretary Brenda barber snapped.

UK pension system fares sixth in EU

Blueprint of Lib Dems pension plan released
Liberal Democrat leader Charles Kennedy has come out with a pension blueprint, which he said is sure to remove all pensioners out of poverty. It would, however, delay the official retirement age to 67, which would be implemented only in a span of 25 years.

No agreement in pension age for local authority workers
Talks to resolve the deadlock over pension for two million local authority workers in Britain ended without an agreement on Monday. Deputy prime minister John Prescott met employers and union representatives, but there was no deal at the end of the talks.

Many are ignorant over pension provisions, reveals study
One in every five people in Britain does not have any idea of the value of their state pension when they retire, research by charity Help the Aged has revealed. It found that nearly two thirds of those queried thought they would not be able to live on their final pension.
