A multi-millionaire property dealer who began a property empire with the aid of fraudulent mortgage applications was jailed on Thursday for two years.
David Dale, 49, of Bryncoch, Port Talbot, South Wales, was sentenced of fraud when a judge confiscated £4.2million and asked him to pay £100,000 towards prosecution costs. He admitted that he was guilty of building a property empire by using fraudulent mortgages and ordered to pay compensation.
Dale also convinced his family and friends to apply for mortgages and acquired approximately 400 houses. The judge at Swansea Crown Court also ordered Dale to repay current value of each house plus their rental income.
At least 57 properties were illegally bought, where he always repaid the mortgage payments.
During 80s after going bankrupt as an estate agent, Dale began a career in development of property by using false details to bag mortgages.
A few days back, Judge Burr sentenced eleven persons for allowing Dale to use their details to get mortgages. All these people were either friends or relatives of Dale. Dale said he was fully responsible for their involvement in the offences.
Before Dale was sentenced, he said: “I lost one empire, I’ll make back another.”
At one time, he was one of the richest persons in Wales with an estimated fortune of £15 million. He was visibly shocked after the sentence.
Christopher Vosper defense lawyer for Dale said that his client’s victimless crimes had benefitted the community.
Since 1997, Dale began applying for buy to let mortgages and switched over to doing business legitimately.
Dale was arrested in July 2003 a day before he planned to migrate to Spain with his wife, a multiple sclerosis patient.
