LONDON - Each year, it seems heralds in a new style. No not in the fashion world, but in the world of the Christmas trees. This year, the word is out that black Christmas trees are in and in a big way.
"Black and white has been a strong interiors trend for a couple of years now. If you want to do an elegant, sophisticated Christmas, black is the way to do it," says Susan Rose, the editor of Ideal Home. "It's a look that fits with all our pale and minimal homes where traditional reds, golds and greens are going to stick out like a sore thumb."
These black Christmas trees are 6ft tall, pre-lit with 400 white lights and are available for £90. And almost 50 days to go before Christmas, these trees are on top of everybody's Christmas shopping lists. Sales figures from John Lewis department stores confirm that the black trees are outselling the traditionally hot ice white, gold and green trees.
Traditionally, 10 percent of artificial trees go off the shelves in October, while 40 percent get sold in November. The number rises to 50 percent in December. This year though 25 percent of the trees have already been sold and retailers say that they could soon be sold out. Christine Kasoulis, the Christmas stationary buyer at John Lewis said, "Today, when Victoriana is inspiring many on the catwalk as well as in the home, these early sales of the artificial trees and more particularly the chic black range may well demonstrate that it has become a style statement once more."
iwantoneofthose.com, a shopping website also said that black trees are hot at the moment, "Black and pink are this year's colors when it comes to retro cool fake trees," the website said. There are two varieties of the black trees, priced £7.99 and £11.99 and both are doing good business, the site confirmed.
