With the advent of technology, life indeed has become more simple and easy; hasn't it? The arrival of internet has revolutionised modes and methods of communication. The use of the Internet and world wide web has also led to online transactions, ecommerce and online banking on a global scale.

However, along with this progress comes an ever increasing host of problems. The security problem is the main threat. National Hi-Tech Crime Unit of UK has come up with a new website aimed at helping all the PC users and businesses.

The NHTCU in association with the UK government has launched the Get Safe Online. This move has been welcomed all over. A host of sponsors like eBay, Dell, BT, HSBC, Microsoft and others have come forward to sponsor this move. Each of these big names has contributed up to 150,000 pounds.

Although, people use internet extensively, many are unaware of the threats they may face. The people in general are poorly informed and they do not realize that their confidential information can be tampered with. A vast number of users as high as 42 percent still turned to their family and friends to procure security advice.

83% of internet users had very little knowledge about the security issues. Nowadays people use the internet for doing their bank work, communicate and for buying household items. People have to provide their confidential financial information to carry out the online transactions. This puts them under severe threat. The site would provide information on specific threats and the precaution to be taken to ward of the threat.

With organized crime on the internet becoming rampant, it would be a very good idea to use Get Safe Online and use all its features. This website covers a plethora of information. It includes how to set and use the password, protection of personal information, to maintain and update both the virus software and virus signatures and the use of firewalls.

This website will also enlighten the users regarding the spyware and adware risks. The importance of backing up systems would also be emphasized. All in all Get Safe Online would serve as the ultimate source of information regarding net security.

ICM interviewed 1000 people across UK for carrying out a survey. This was done in order to ascertain the awareness level of people regarding net security. The results revealed that less than 50 percent of the people had very little knowledge regarding net security. With a situation like this NHTCU and the government have taken a step in the right direction by introducing Get Safe Online.
