LONDON - Mobile phone giant Vodafone Group PLC today said that the number of subscribers to its third generation (3G) services was growing by the day and had hit the 4.35 million mark. Out of this 3.95 million were consumer devices and the remaining 400,000 were made up of Vodafone Mobile Connect 3G/GPRS data cards.

"Vodafone will be offering a broader range of phones at better value prices this Christmas. A significant proportion of the range is targeted at mid to entry-level price points, encouraging the mass-market adoption of Vodafone live! with 3G," said Peter Bamford. Vodafone's head of marketing. "We are confident that this is going to be a 3G Christmas." The mobile giant is leaving no stone unturned in its quest for 10 million subscribers to its 3G services by the end of April next year.

Vodafone had announced the introduction of 15 new 3G handsets last week. The company said that these were meant to take 3G to the masses. "The rate of take up is accelerating. The 3G average revenue per user, a key measure of profitability, is 24% higher than for the 2.5G user," said Bramford at a conference for analysts and investors in Newbury, England.

The company said that it was on target to hit a growth percentage of 6 percent to 9 percent next year. However, Chief Executive Arun Sarin said nothing about the details of the revenues generated this year. Sarin only preferred to enthuse about prospective acquisitions in Eastern and Central Europe, "We continue to look for opportunities in Asia. There are clearly one or two investments that we have, where we would like to take our investments up (increase our holdings) -- countries such as Poland or in SFR (in France)," he said.

Sarin was also philosophical about the company's prospects in Europe, "Frankly in the next six months, we can expect great competition from the Telefonicas in Spain and the T-Mobiles in Germany and DoCoMO and 'au' in Japan," he said.
