LONDON - Mobile network Virgin Mobile is all set to launch the Apple iPod phone in the UK by the end of September. The Motorola Rokr E1 phone was launched last week in the United States.
The Motorola ROKR is the world’s first iTunes-enabled phone. Consumers were eagerly awaiting its launch, something that has been in the works since Apple had announced a partnership with Motorola last year. Virgin Mobile retailers in the UK will begin selling the phone from September 26 onwards. Customers can book their phones by calling Virgin Mobile on 0845 602 4418. The phone is priced at £189.99.
“The iTunes phone is a perfect fit for Virgin Mobile’s customers who love their music and are keen to own the latest technology - we think it’s the most desirable gift you could find in your stocking this Christmas!” said Graeme Hutchinson, sales and marketing director at Virgin Mobile. The company joins O2 in promoting the ROKR.
The ROKR E1 weighs just about 107 grams and measures 108mm x 46mm x 21mm. Its power packed features include a camera of VGA 640x480 pixels as well as 10 hours talk time. The memory capacity is provided courtesy the External 512MB Transflash card. The OKR supports MIDI, MP3, WAV, and AAC audio formats. However, the number of songs that can be played on the phone are limited to just 100. Apple did say that this was because they were not looking to replace the iPod with ROKR.
The phone is also equipped with Bluetooth, net access, triband, and all the necessary accessories in today's top-notch mobile phones. However, the jury is still out on whether the design of the phone is below par by current day standards.
