LONDON - WiMax continues to excite companies about its potential. This fact was brought home in an effective manner when wireless equipment maker Airspan Networks joined hands with U.K. ISP Pipex Communications to undertake a six-month trail to test out the technology.
The companies have zeroed in on the Midlands region for conducting these tests. The trial is being conducted in two phases. The initial phase will deal with the logistics of delivering deliver high-speed Internet access and Voice over Internet Protocol services. The second phase of the trial will test out these services in 20 to 50 residential complexes in the area. Pipex customers would have to get Airspan's indoor WiMax modem to get connected to the wireless broadband service. Other phases being planned include reaching out to laptops as well as handheld devices.
Airspan spokesman Peter Aronstam said that the trial would help the companies chart out the future course of action. He declined to comment on the specific number of users who would take part in the trial and only said "it will be a limited number in just one town." He added that there was no timeframe for the technology to be adopted into their respective offerings.
WiMax is an emerging technology that supports very high bit rates required to upload or download from a base station located in a radius of 30 miles. Chipmaker Intel is pushing the technology since it believes that it would be the next big thing to hit the IT market. Intel's interest has caused several companies including AT&T and Sprint to start testing out the system in the US.
