Google is top brand, edges out Apple
Search engine company Google Inc. has been the No. 1 brand in the world in 2005, according to the annual survey by online branding magazine brandchannel.com. It has edged out Apple Computer Company to the second place. Google reclaims the top position, which it last held in 2003.

Majority of Asda staff to miss bonus this year
Only less than 40 per cent of the employees of Wal-Mart-owned Asda will be entitled for bonus payments this year as the supermarket's performance has been lackluster, it is reported in the newspapers.

School reforms bill faces opposition from Labour's ranks
Britain's education secretary Ruth Kelly said the government is determined to go ahead with the school reforms in spite of reservations from its own party ranks. Former labour leader Lord Kinnock had said the proposal contained in the government's white paper on school reforms would lead to ''dreadful shattering of the school system''.

When dying costs more than living
LONDON - The costs of burying the dead have soared by more than 60 percent over the last five years, according to a survey commissioned by insurance firm American Life. The 2006 Survey of Funeral Costs quizzed more than a 100 funeral directors and found that a shortage of burial places and the increasingly extravagant coffins have pushed the cost of simple burial up by £1,250 over the last five years.

House prices go up for second month in December, says RICS study
House prices had risen in the three months ended December as the buoyant markets during the holiday season had helped the market, according to a study by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. It feels the price gains will continue through 2006.

Oil prices shoot up over Iran sanctions, Nigerian rebel attacks
Crude oil prices went up to a three-month high Tuesday, crossing $65 a barrel as fears of disruption in shipments from Iran and Nigeria loomed large and reports came in that global oil demand for 2006 will be higher.

House price inflation up in November, says ODPM
There are evident signs of recovery in house prices, according to the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM). Data compiled by it indicates that house prices have shown an increase of 0.6 per cent in November 2005, after a 0.5 per cent decrease in October.
