BALFOUR Beatty Plc, which is reputed to be the largest construction company in UK, has bagged three contracts worth £110 million. They include the new Higher Education and Further Education Campus for York College estimated at £46million, an office block for Castlemore Securities in Holborn, London worth £42m and three school buildings worth ₤22 million in Glasgow, Scotland.
In Glasgow, the three contracts are for St Bartholomew's in Castlemilk, Dalmarnock Primary in the East End, and Crookston Castle Primary. These are scheduled to be completed in the first half of 2007.
The York College is expected to be the largest of its kind in England. It will have a four-storey building which is to occupy a space of 30,000 square metres. It will include a separate nursery, car parking and also additional playing fields.
Castlemore Securities will be housed in a space of 16,000 square metres at 40 High Holborn. This block is due for completion in spring of 2008. Balfour had earlier executed the project of building £100m Waverley Gate Development belonging to Castlemore in Edinburgh. This project worth £35 million was credited for being completed successfully. It also has the credit of having the largest listed facade retention in Europe.
In Scotland, the three campuses are for pre-12 education for a project awarded by Glasgow City Council. These will be housed in unique and environmental-friendly buildings.
This is good news for the construction giant, which was fined ₤10 million on October 7 for its supposed negligence along with Network Rail, formerly Railtrack. They were charged for causing the Hatfield rail disaster when a King’s Cross to Leed’s express derailed killing four and causing 102 people to be injured in October 2000.
