LONDON: UBS’s global CIO Philip Freeborn was yesterday appointed Barclays Capital’s CIO from January. He will join the firm’s investment banking division taking charge of its global technology and strategic planning.
Freeborn will replace Kevin O’Reilly who left some months ago to join consultancy firm Deloitte as a partner. For Barclays, Freeborn’s appointment marks the third executive level hiring in three months.
Earlier, Citibank’s Don Trotta had joined up as chief information officer, followed by Sandeep Chouhan from Morgan Stanley’s International Consumer Banking Group. Chouhan joined as senior technology officer responsible taking charge of technology for the firm’s international and commercial banking division.
Freeborn enjoys a good industry reputation for his execution skills. The technology professional spent the past 12 years in various roles at UBS, where he is currently leading a team of several thousand IT professionals worldwide.
At Barclays he will report to Rich Ricci, the firm’s COO.
The movement is seen as another stride in the firm’s progressive steps – Barclays was among the first to invest in information technology, an area now considered crucial for the business.
