ABERDEEN, Scotland - A beggar has probably saved the Royal Bank of Scotland in Aberdeen tons of money after he alerted police about a skimmer fitted to a cash machine near the bank.
The homeless man was getting on with his daily routine of begging near the Academy shopping center in Belmont Street, Aberdeen, when he found that two men who were hovering near the cash machine were acting suspiciously. He happened to observe that the front of the Royal Bank of Scotland machine was out of shape after these two men left. “The man was begging next to the cash machine when his attention was drawn to the men hanging around. He investigated and managed to remove the device from the front of the machine, then reported it to police," a spokesman for the Grampian police said.
The beggar then pulled at the machine and discovered the skimmer that had been attached to it. He promptly took it to the city's police headquarters. This device was found just weeks after a similar one was unearthed at a branch of Clydesdale Bank. Police are looking out for two white men aged between 22 to 27 and 5ft 10in tall with dark brown, collar-length hair.
They also said that so far no complaints of money lost have been registered with them, but nevertheless warned customers to routinely check their accounts, "There have not yet been any reports of anyone who has lost money, but after people check their bank accounts, we may have reports in the next few days." a spokesman said.
Cash machine attacks are becoming a headache for police and public alike as there has been a spurt of such crimes in Scotland lately. Police are asking the public to be conscious of this fact and be alert when they are drawing money at an ATM.
